| Humor aside, men in Princess Leia costumes - not a great idea. |
So I was asked by two of my students today if I would join them in their upcoming Variety Show act. It meant a lot to me to be asked, but I immediately began to think about how nervous I get when I have to go up on stage in front of an audience (classroom settings excluded).
I began to explain my worries, but was quickly interrupted with reasons why I might be willing to look past my fears. First, one student began, "You would be completely dressed up in a costume and no one will even recognize you." She looked to see my reaction, but it must not have been to her liking because she continued. "Also Mr. Solarz, you only have like one line and then you get to leave the stage." I liked the sound of that, but she knew how stressed out I would feel in anticipation, so she added one more point, "Everyone will laugh at your line - it's really funny!"
Reluctantly I asked, "What would I need to do?" more for clarity than in agreement. She said, just dress up like Princess Leia, walk on stage and say, "Where's Chewbacca and Luke Skywalker? Whoops! Wrong set!" and then walk off stage. My raised eyebrow and grunt of laughter led the other student to quickly say, "Or you could be Darth Vader. It would still be funny!"
I'm leaning towards the dark side.
